5 Tips for Getting More Referrals
Referrals have always been one of the most effective ways to attract new clients, team members, and prospects.
Today, there are even referral websites where you can check out what others say before doing business with someone.
Many of my most trusted service professionals came from a referral.
These include my dentist from California (I sure wish I could have moved him to Utah, and then to Nevada with me), my manicurist, my housekeeper, and my handyman.
Depending on your business, a high percentage of your sales should come through word-of-mouth referrals.
But getting quality referrals doesn’t happen automatically. It’s a matter of intuition, skill, and persistence.
Here are Five Ways to Encourage Referrals:
1. Remind current customers to post online reviews –
Yelp is a great place to get clients and referrals. Encourage your clients to candidly share their experiences online. Building a web following also helps your business appear higher in the web search engine results without online advertising.
2. Ask directly for the referral –
End every conversation with a satisfied customer/business partner/mentor, by asking at least one of these questions: Who else? Where else? What else?
This invites the other person to be part of your growth.
If you’ve provided great service to them, they want to help.
When they feel that they are a valuable part of your solution, they will do whatever they can to help you.
In addition, ask for a testimonial from your satisfied customers and place them on your website.
This also gives your customer additional exposure for their business.
3. Reward referrals –
You can pay people a commission for referrals or you can offer a free gift or free or discounted service.
People love to be recognized for helping you, and it can be amazing how well those free gifts work.
4. Encourage sharing –
Be sure to include “share” buttons on every blog post you write.
Set this up so your readers can easily post your content on their Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Linked-In, and Google+ pages with one click.
If you’re sending out email newsletters, be sure to include a share link on these as well.
You can say something like, “Like this newsletter? Feel free to share it with your fans and followers who would find it valuable too.”
5. Thank everyone who refers you –
When someone goes the extra mile for you, make sure they are thanked, even if it doesn’t end in a sale.
A personalized email, handwritten note, or card lets them know that you appreciate that they thought highly enough of you to stake their reputation on recommending you.
Be sure to say that you enjoyed connecting with their contact and that you look forward to serving their future referrals as well.
Be sure to give out referrals yourself.
You’ll reap more recommendations if you are taking the time to provide referrals that meet the needs of the people you connect with.
Be that person who is always helping everyone else, and in turn, they’ll want to help you.
