7 Steps For Setting and Achieving Your Goals

7 Steps For Setting and Achieving Your Goals Everyone has goals, whether we know it or not.  We have goals to keep our current job, or get a different one, or even to start a business.  We have goals to save for our future, or to travel, take a vacation, or purchase the things we need and want to make our lives more enjoyable.

An important distinction about goals, though, is that top achievers are very intentional and focused on their goals, while many of the rest of us are not.

Achieving a goal offers a great feeling like no other.  You’ll feel better about yourself and be more motivated.  Before you know it, you will be on a roll that cannot be stopped.

So here are sever steps to help you set and achieve your goals:

1.  Decide exactly what you want in each area of your life.

Be specific and realistic about what it is that you want to achieve.  “I want to live in a nice house,” is an open-ended dream compared to, “I want to own a three bedroom house with two bathrooms in Orlando.”  The more detailed you can be about what it is that you want to do or have the better.

2.  Write it down, clearly and in detail.

Like any good idea, goals need to be written down so that you can refer back to them every now and again. You may decide to change them or to abandon them. That’s your prerogative. But they need to be in writing.  Then you’ll be able to refer back to them again and again.

3.  Set a specific deadline.

Your deadline doesn’t have to be exact, but it should be your best guess.  Your deadlines must be realistic based on your goals.  If you have a home based business and have limited time to work your business, don’t make your goal to have earned a million dollars by the end of the year.  Give yourself enough time to accomplish what you’ve set out to do.

4.  Make your plan of action.

Think about what you need to do in order to make it happen.  If your goal is to buy that three bedroom house, set up an account for a down payment, figure out how much you need and start saving.  Go to real estate websites and look around for houses that meet, (or are close to) the criteria of what you want.  As you think of new items, add them to your list.

5.  Prioritize your action list.

Organize the items on your list into a plan by placing them into the proper sequence and priority.  Keep it updated.  This will be a constantly evolving list that will change as you work your way through it.  Sometimes your goals evolve and change.  That’s okay.  Make the necessary adjustments.

6.  Take action immediately.

Once you know what your goals are, act on them. So take the first step

No one else is going to do it for you.  You have to take action.  Without action on your part, nothing you want will get done.

7.  Do something every day that moves you toward achieving your goal.

Read over your goals at least once a day.  The more often you do, the better.  Read your goals when you get up in the morning and before you go to bed at night.  Take steps every day to move you at least one step closer.  Maintain the momentum.

If you don’t already set goals, do so, starting now. As you make this technique part of your life, you’ll find your career accelerating, and you’ll wonder how you did without it!

p.s.  Come up with reasons why you want to accomplish your goals.  Write down as many as you can.  Read your list when you’re feeling a lack of motivation.
