Blogging with Long Tail Keywords For Search Engine Optimization
For new online entrepreneurs, nothing is more daunting than trying to figure out how to get search engine optimization and grow a niche blog from its creation to a thriving and profitable site.
There are thousands, if not millions of other sites vying for the attention of the consumer.
Most new bloggers don’t even understand the concept of keyword traffic, but once they’re aware of it, they go about it all wrong.
They mistakenly believe they have to compete for the broadest keywords possible, such as the words diet, money, or dogs, for example.
This makes for a very long, hard journey, as their niche site fails to break into the top listings of the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages).
Instead, they’re buried dozens of pages back, never seeing any reputable traffic, and therefore, not seeing any income from it, either.
There’s a quick and easy remedy for ranking a new blog that you can do free and effectively from day one, forward.
It’s called long tail keyword blogging, and it can give your blog the foundation it needs to compete with the top bloggers in your industry.
Breaking Into the SERPs Made Easier
For someone new to competitive blogging, it’s disheartening for them to first realize they won’t be able to outrank other sites for broad keywords like the ones mentioned above.
Not at first, at least.
But what they may not realize is that even though other, more established brands can rank well for broad, single niche keywords, they have a trick up their sleeve they can use to steer customers their way instead.
Broad phrases won’t do you much good anyway. There are too many possibilities for them.
Let’s take the niche keyword dogs for example. And let’s pretend you’ve just set up a blog about dog training.
If you think about the consumer who is sitting there typing in the word dogs, what all could they possibly be wanting to know?
Maybe they just want to watch dog videos or see pictures of cute dogs.
They might be wanting dog breed information. Or maybe they want to adopt one soon.
It could even be someone typing it in who wants a stuffed animal – you just don’t know because it’s too broad.
The same goes for diets – they might want to know the dangers of them, which one is best, what’s good for their pet, and so on.
A single word simply doesn’t tell you enough. That’s where long tail keywords can help.
What Is a Long Tail Keyword Phrase?
While a broad keyword is typically a single word (two at the most), a long tail keyword phrase has three or more words strung together.
And this is actually how most consumers search for what they want on the web.
Now imagine if someone were wanting to find out how to train a dog to stop barking.
Using that exact keyword phrase would help you outrank a site whose only target was the word dog.
It’s more specific and search engines will be evaluating your site constantly using bots and see that your blog teaches all sorts of dog training tips, and more specifically – how to train a dog to stop barking.
You can even take it a step further and use one of the following long tail keyword phrases:
- How to train a dog to stop barking at other dogs
- How to train a dog to stop barking at strangers
- How to train a dog to stop barking when left alone
- How to train a dog to stop barking on walks
Even the phrase how to train a dog is a long tail keyword phrase that you can be competitive with for your own blog.
The shorter you get, such as dog training, the more competitive it becomes and the harder it is to rank against your competition.
You can work your way backward as a strategy.
For example, if your ultimate goal is to rank for the phrase dog training, you might start with a long tail phrase like dog training techniques for biting.
They have a blog post about dog training techniques where you cover many topics like biting, barking, jumping and more.
After that, go ahead and create the post targeting dog training – because over time, as your site grows into a large authority site, you will be able to rank competitively for those broad keywords you wish you could rank for right out of the gate.
Long tail keywords are known as low-hanging fruit.
There isn’t as much traffic for them, but there’s also not as much competition.
And when you start targeting many long tail keyword phrases, you begin to amass a great deal of organic traffic.
The profit potential adds up, especially when you start creating your own info products (on topics like dog training tips). It also helps when you start targeting long tail buyer keywords.
A buyer keyword is a long tail phrase for a product.
For example, someone might type in best dog training clicker.
Using this phrase, you can whip up a blog post targeting people searching for one of these and give your honest review of the best dog training clicker on the market, linked with your affiliate link, of course.
Strategic Searches for Low Hanging Fruit
So how do you find this low hanging fruit?
Start with a keyword tool. You can use either a free or paid keyword tool – or even a free search engine!
Just going to Google and starting the keyword phrase, it will autofill with the top 10 searches for you.
For example, if you’re in the diet niche and you type in best diet for, you might see results for weight loss, diabetics, high blood pressure, women over 50 and more. The more you type, the longer the phrases it will show you.
If you went with best diet for diabetics, you would see more results tacking on the words to lose weight, with heart disease, on insulin, with gout and so on.
So, you can create an Excel spreadsheet or document that expands on your niche keyword into all kinds of areas and just keep drilling them down.
Using a keyword tool, you can use incomplete phrases and allow the tool to fill it in for you.
Using a simple asterisk, you can get back many results that you may not have considered.
For example, you might try searching normally for best clicker for dog training and see how many variations you get for that.
But using an asterisk, you can try, best * for dog training and see what else consumers are looking for.
The results might show things like:
- Best treats for dog training
- Best books for dog training
- Best whistle for dog training
- Best age for dog training
- Best leash for dog training
Or you can simply use the asterisk as * dog training and get results like service dog training or therapy dog training.
These long tail keyword phrases really help you tap into the mindset of your potential customers and allow you to develop content that best matches with what they hoped to learn.
If your blog is targeting exactly what the people want, instead of a bunch of useless information, then you’ll be viewed as a leading industry expert, provided your advice stands out as exceptional content.
You’ll also be able to see patterns of what your audience is looking for.
For example, in long tail keywords, you might keep seeing words like quickly, affordable, or easy.
This will allow you to present information that best meets their needs.
Some keyword tools only use Google as their source of information. But with others, you can see how consumers are searching on other sites.
That may include other search engines like Bing, but it could also include eCommerce sites like Amazon, Walmart, Etsy, and more.
Some will even scour sites like Fiverr, Wikipedia, and Pinterest to pinpoint how your prospective customers are looking up information related to your niche blog, giving you a well-rounded approach to long tail keyword blogging.
