As you’re getting started to grow your business online, it’s normal to make mistakes. Hopefully you learn from them and don’t make the same ones over and over again. But mistakes are how you learn to do something new. You can’t learn what to do unless you learn what not to do, and learning that is what will help you find success.
So here are some of the things I learned along my blogging journey. Hopefully these will help you shorten your learning curve and help you find success more quickly. After you read this article, please share things that you’ve learned along your journey and some of your best tips in the comments section below. We’d love to hear all about them.
Use a self-hosted Word Press Blog –
There are lots of sites out there that offer blogging platforms. But it is in your best interest to host your own. Find a service to host your blog for you. That way you retain ownership of your blog and your content. You’re not at the whim of some service who might someday close down or change the rules.
Be sure to offer a way to have users opt-in to receive updates from you –
When readers Opt-in to receive updates, they join your list. Your list is probably your most important online marketing tool. Your Auto Responder will help you continue the relationship building process with your entire list. And you’ll be able to run your business from anywhere in the world – on autopilot. Your Auto Responder system should provide you an opt-in box you can put on your website to collect their email address.
Be sure to use keywords –
Think about the people who would be interested in reading your blog, or who you want to market to. What types of things are they interested in. What do they do. Figure out what they would search for if they were looking for information. Use those key words in your blog post. This is what will help people find you.
Social Sharing Buttons –
In the beginning I didn’t know how to use these or even that they were available. But they are very important because they give your reader an easy way to share your content, helping it go viral.
I have tried many different Social Sharing plug-ins, but have finally found one I’m totally happy with. The one I use is called Digg Digg. The link here is for their website, but I would suggest you install it from your Plug-ins section of your Word Press Blog.
When you write your posts, concentrate on your reader –
Your writer doesn’t always want to hear about you. Make the content about them – tips to help them achieve success, or how your product or service will help them.
You need a good commenting system –
Again, I tried many different programs, but finally settled on the Disqus Comment System. Install this from your Plug-ins section of your Word Press Blog.
Then be sure to actively engage with your comments throughout the day. This is very important and will help build relationships with your readers.
Have a call to action –
Whatever your blog is about, be sure to include a call to action. If you want them to join your business, or purchase your product, or get your e-book, or even vote for your puppy, tell them what it is that you want. After you’ve provided valuable content, some people will be interested in what you can provide for them. Give them a clear and easy way to take the next step.
It takes time to build an audience –
Be patient. Success takes time. Your traffic will build up. Be sure to provide valuable content – something to keep them interested in coming back for more.
Market your blog posts –
Nobody is going to know your blog is there unless you help them find it. There are many ways to syndicate your blog posts. Be sure to get out there and promote your blog around the internet.
Pretty Link is a wonderful tool to help you shorten links –
One of my favorite Word Press plug-ins is Pretty Link. This is a tool that will let you create a link to any internet address using your blog web address. It also gives you great stats to see how many people are clicking on it. Install this from the plug-ins section of your Word Press blog.
Spam Protection –
Akismet is quite possibly the best way in the world to protect your blog from comment and trackback spam. I absolutely LOVE this protection. Install this from the plug-ins section of your Word Press blog.
So there you have it. These are the tips that I’ve learned along the way that I believe you’ll find the most helpful. I hope they help you to shorten your learning curve. Please share below some of the tips that you’ve learned along the way, or your best blogging tips, and even mistakes that you’ve made and what you’ve learned from them.
