Distractions to Avoid While Working Online
When marketing online, most of us are trying to do 100 things at once, and when it comes to running your online business – writing blog posts, scheduling Facebook posts, responding to comments & messages, running ads, etc. – proper time management is crucial!
Here are some ideas to help you better manage your time while working online:
Reading too Many Blogs –
I am a blogger, and of course I want you reading my blog. But I also know that reading too many blog posts can be a problem for many people.
The problem happens when you follow too many blogs & spend your entire day reading them — and then don’t get anything productive done.
I suggest you reduce the amount of blogs that you follow to 4 or 5 and only pay attention to them. You’ll still get plenty out of these, I promise.
Text Messages –
Smart phones are super powerful productivity devices, but they can also be very distracting.
When you’re doing work on your Facebook page, ignore all text messages — in fact, just turn your phone off or on silent until you’re done!
We all have many social media accounts, and are probably over-connected. How many tabs do you have open at one time?… Twitter, Google+, Facebook, Instagram, etc. etc. etc.
And of course, whenever something happens we get those facebook notifications. When I get one of these, I immediately want to see what it is!
So close all tabs that give notifications – and when you’re on Facebook running your page, switch over and “Use Facebook as Your Page”. That way you won’t see all those notifications and get distracted. They’ll still be there when you are done. I promise!
Facebook Messages/Chat –
Just as the Facebook News Feed can be a distraction when you’re trying to stay on task, Facebook Messages & Chat can be even worse.
It’s very tempting to feel like we need to respond to every message immediately. But whoever sent that message can wait.
Also, I worry that people will see that I’m online and will wonder why I’m not responding to them. So the best thing when it comes to chat, just turn it off!
Those messages will still be waiting for you after you get your work done.
Email can be a major distraction & time suck if you’re not careful — just like notifications on social sites & messages on Facebook.
I leave my Gmail tab open all day long & when I see I have a new email, I immediately want to jump over and check it out. But of course, that doesn’t help me manage my time at all.
The best thing to do is shut down all tabs when you’re working on your page — and yes, that one is the hardest for me too. 🙂
A Cluttered Desk –
I am soooo guilty of this one!
I have stacks of paper all over my desk. It causes me to have a harder time staying on task.
On the other hand, when my desk is clean I feel incredibly accomplished & I tend to complete more tasks — amazing how that works.
At the end of each day, throw away all of your trash & clear your desk! But be sure to do this at the end of your workday, not the beginning. Because if you go off on a tangent while cleaning your desk, you’re doomed!
Listening to too Many “Experts” –
There are hundreds of “experts” in every niche — this is especially true in the online Marketing niche.
In the beginning you’ll find yourself listening to & reading every one of them. That’s not necessarily bad as you’re learning. But what is bad is trying to keep up with all of them — and getting overwhelmed with noise.
Find a small handful of people you identify with & relate to, and ONLY FOLLOW THEM!
Although many of these are simple and could be considered common sense, they are things that can cause us to lose time and productivity doing. By taking some of these ideas and putting them to use, you’ll find that you get your work done so much more quickly. And before you know it you can have your work all done and have the rest of the glorious day to do whatever you want!
