My Subconscious Made Me Do It

My Subconscious Made Me Do It

My Subconscious Made Me Do It

We as humans have a conscious mind and a subconscious mind. In reality though, most of us are only aware of our conscious minds because that’s where we process all our information.

It’s where we figure things out, judge, obsess, analyze, criticize, worry that our butt is too big, decide once and for all to stop eating fried food, figure out that 2+2=4, try to remember where we left the car keys and tons of other stuff.

The conscious mind is sort of like an over-achiever, constantly spinning around from thought to thought, stopping only when we sleep and then starting up again as soon as we are awake.  This mind, also known as our frontal lobe, doesn’t fully mature until sometime around puberty.

Our subconscious mind, on the other hand, is the non-analytical part of our brain that’s fully developed by the time we are born.  The subconscious mind is about feelings and instincts and it’s where we store all the early, outside information we get.

The subconscious mind believes everything.  It has no filter, and doesn’t know the difference between what is true and what’s not.  If our parents tell us that nobody in our family knows how to make money, we believe them.  If they show us that marriage means two people fight all the time, we believe them.  If they frown at us, we figure out that whatever we were just doing is bad, even though the frown might have been about something all together different.

Most of this information comes into our subconscious mind when we are little kids and don’t know any better.  We take in this information in the form of smiles, frowns, raised eyebrows, tears, laughter, etc. that we receive from the people around us.  We have no ability to filter any of it because our conscious mind isn’t developed yet.  All of this information becomes part of our subconscious mind and become truth.  For better or for worse, these are now our beliefs.

Let’s say you were raised by a father who was constantly struggling with money and walked around grumbling that money doesn’t grow on trees…  Your subconscious mind might have developed the belief that money sucks and causes pain, or money = struggle.

Cut to yourself as an adult who, in your conscious mind, would love nothing more than to be raking in the dough, but who is subconsciously mistrusting of money.  You may now manifest these subconscious beliefs by staying broke no matter how hard you consciously try to make money.

So every time you ask yourself, “What is my problem?  Why am I afraid to show someone my business?” the answer generally lies in some limiting false subconscious belief that you’ve been dragging around without even realizing it.  This is very important, because no matter how hard we work, or how successful we become, we’re still being controlled by the beliefs we’re carrying around in our subconscious minds.

The first step to ridding yourself of limiting subconscious beliefs is to become aware of them.  Take a minute to look at some of the less-than-impressive areas of your life and think about the underlying beliefs that could have created them.  Are you making far less money that you know you’re capable of earning?  Have you reached a certain income level that, no matter what, you can’t seem to get past?  Write down the first five things that come to mind when you think about money.  Is your list full of hope or is it full of fear and loathing?  What are your parent’s beliefs about money?  What about the other people you grew up around?  Do you see a connection between their money beliefs and yours?

I’ll be writing future posts to delve deeper into this subject, but in the meantime, practice stepping aside and notice what’s happening in the dysfunctional areas of your life.  Work on strengthening your awareness.  Listen to what’s coming up from your subconscious, i.e., “I’ll have to do things I hate in order to make money”, or “Rich people are not nice people”, etc.  Because once you really see what’s going on, you can start to drag out the stinky carcasses of your limiting beliefs and get rid of them.  This will open up the space to invite in new fresh, awesome beliefs and experiences that you want to have in your life!
