Want to Be a Stay At Home Mom?

Want to Be a Stay At Home Mom?

If you’re a working mom, I’m sure you’ve at least fantasized about being able to stay home with your kids full-time.  I know I did!

No more driving your kids to daycare, looking at their sad little faces as you drive off.  And to have the chance to raise your own kids, instead of the daycare raising them!  Sounds great, huh!

But it’s not all a bed of roses either.  Let’s look at the good, the bad and the ugly.

Financial Stress –

Quitting your job means your household will have less money.  What will this do to your current style of living?  That’s different for everyone, but is could mean anything from worrying to how you’re going to pay your mortgage, to maybe having to give up your vacation this year.

Only you will know how this will affect you, but I suggest carefully going over your budget to see if this is really feasible for you.  What trade-offs are you willing to make in order to have this stay at home mom dream come true?

Loneliness –

Being at home can mean cutting yourself off from your friends and adult conversation.  Sometimes we don’t realize just how much social interaction we get in our jobs and really miss it when we are at home full-time.

Of course people differ in their need for social contact.  Some women are happy to go all day without speaking to another adult, while others would go absolutely crazy.  Do you have a support network in place to help you out?  Maybe you can find playgroups or classes in your area that will provide you with social contacts.  Be sure to check this all out before making that big decision.

Sense of self –

How much of your identity comes from your job?  Some women go through an identity crises when they are no longer to say, “I am a nurse,” or “I am an attorney,” etc.  Is being a wife and mother enough for you to feel fulfilled as an individual.

With that being said, there are some incredibly positive aspects of staying home too.  Most women would rather be spending time with their kids and family than at the office.

As a stay at home mom, you’ll get to know your children better because you’ll be with them most of the time.  You’ll also be able to offer your kids a sense of stability and security that is difficult to achieve when you’re working full-time.  Most stay at home moms feel less stressed, more at peace with themselves, and more fulfilled in general.

Many stay at home moms have no regrets!  How many of us really look back on our lives and say, “I wish I had worked more when my children were little”?  I have never met a stay at home mom who regretted that decision.

In fact, once moms get the chance to be at home, they never want to go back.  Mothers with full-time jobs often see their children less than their daycare provider does.  They may or may not be there for their child’s first steps, first words.

I was not able to be home with my daughter when she was little.  The hardest thing ever for me was to not be able to be at her dance recitals and performances.  My employer just would not let me have those times off and I had to depend on friends to take her.  I absolutely hated that!

The good news is… being a stay at home mom is absolutely possible!

Staying home may be easier financially than you think.  You won’t have the expenses of a job such as the wardrobe required, lunches out, or even gas & car costs for your commute.

And it doesn’t have to be all or nothing…

You don’t have to choose between working full-time or not at all.  Many moms are finding that a home business to give them the financial resources, as well as to meet their social interaction and accomplishment needs.

A home business can provide you with the chance to explore your real talents and interests, while creating opportunities to use your skills to make money while being home with your children.

A home business can be an exciting and rewarding experience.  Let’s face it, there are no easy choices for mothers who work, but mothering and managing a home business is possible and working at home could be the best way for you to manage your multiple priorities.

p.s.  Your children are watching you. Isn’t it great that you can teach them to be entrepreneurs, and that they can do whatever they choose with their life! They’ll learn how to set and achieve goals. They’ll learn that there doesn’t have to be a limit on their income. They’ll learn how wonderful it is to help others… and so much more! What a blessing that will be!
