We all have dreams and goals to achieve before we die, but sometimes life and procrastination get in the way. Many times we just sort of glide along in our lives without realizing that our life is slowly slipping by.
If you don’t live your days by personal goals and plans, chances are you spend most of your time caught up in a flurry of day-to-day activities. Ever feel your days are passing you by without any tangible output to speak of? What did you accomplish in the past 3 months? What are your upcoming goals for the next 3 months? Look at the things you did and the things you’re planning to do next – Do they mean anything to you if you are to die today? Having a bucket list reminds you of what’s really important so you can act on them.
A Bucket List can be just the ticket to be sure that you’re living your life to it’s fullest. Here are some tips to help you create the best bucket list to change your life:
Give yourself time and inspiration –
When you sit down to start writing your dreams many of them will involve travel. That is usually the first thing that comes up for many people. But give yourself a few weeks to think about it. Keep thinking about what you’d like to do. Talk to other people and look at other lists for inspiration. Pinterest is a great source for inspiration.
Be specific – and within your sphere of influence –
When talking about goals, success begets success. Being specific about something you can actually visualize yourself doing will be much more effective than “going to Mars”. Once you’ve determined an achievable goal, opportunities will be shown to you to help you achieve it.
You can also look for some easy goals to achieve by putting a few small purchases on your list too. Maybe you’d like some special decoration for your car, or a certain type of new outfit to wear. These will be easy to cross off your list.
Improve your daily life –
The biggest payoffs from making a bucket list don’t just come from taking vacations – vacations are great anyway – but from upgrading and improving your daily life. Turn your car into a university on wheels. Listen to audiobooks that can enhance your life.
Build in accountability –
Sharing your list, whether online or just by talking about it does two things. First, people might share ideas and opportunities with you. They might know someone who can help you achieve one of the items on your Bucket List. And second, you become accountable for making progress towards your goals. That can increase your odds for success.
Find a partner to work with. You can each create a Bucket List and then you can check in weekly or on whatever time schedule you choose. Getting feedback from someone you trust can be invaluable. Having the sense that someone else cares about your goals and are following along can give you a sense of support when you encounter challenges.
Make it a living document –
A good bucket list should continue to grow and to evolve. While it may be exciting to cross items off the list, you will want to continually be adding more. As you grow and expand yourself, your desires and wants will also increase.
Develop your list. Come up with as many items as you can. The items should be things you have not done yet. Don’t stop until you finish listing at least 101 things! If you find yourself stuck, chances are you are mentally limiting/constraining yourself. Release those shackles – Your bucket list is meant to be a list of everything you want to achieve, do, see, feel and experience in your life.
If you already have your list, take this opportunity to review it. See if there are new items you want to add-on. If so, add them in. Check if all the items listed are still relevant. If not, remove them.
