When People Don’t Support Your New Business
Have you ever shared your dream with someone, only to have them stomp on it with a few unsupportive words?
Unfortunately sometimes the people who say this to you are family members and friends. This can be a hard pill to swallow and sometimes it can make you want to quit.
In fact many do quit before they ever even get started because of one or two negative comments.
This is usually how it goes down: you start a new business and you’re really excited about the possibilities for your new life. You can’t wait to share it with friends, family and co-workers. Some will pat you on the back and say, “Go for it,” but there are always one or two people who will dump on you.
You might hear things like:
“You’re not doing one of those things, are you?”
“I know someone else who tried that and it didn’t work out for them.”
“You can’t make any money doing that.”
“Why don’t you just get a real job!”
The truth is… As much we would like to think that the people around us would be a big ball of positive energy, the reality is that they won’t.
Not to sound harsh, but family and friends are most likely the ones who contributed to the very fears and concerns that we have tried to work through in the first place.
When others around us are not showing us their support, it’s not because they hate us, that they’re mean, or that they don’t believe in us. No, it is actually the other way around.
Most of the time, our friends and family don’t have the trust, imagination, confidence or courage to go after their own dreams, or to believe that their own lives could be bigger and better than what they have now. So they reflect back to us their beliefs, their hardships, and their scars from past failures.
The other possibility is that they can sense the doubt that is coming from you, because you don’t trust yourself enough.
When they reflect your own lack of confidence back to you, you may see it as the lack of support. This is why it is so important that we own our dreams and believe in ourselves before we ask for the support of others. When we live in doubt, doubt is reflected back to us. But when we stand in confidence, trust is reflected back to us.
So, regarding your new business… Let’s look at the facts here…
• Are there people making money in the business that you are in?
• Did these people start out like you did at one point?
• Are there training and systems in place to help you become successful?
The truth is EVERYONE CAN be successful in a legitimate home business if they want it and are willing to work at it.
The real reason that some people may talk negative or steal your dreams is because at some point in their life they let negative self-doubt creep into their lives. Many times they reject success and get the mentality that they could never do it so in their minds others can’t do it either.
Here are some suggestions to help you get past this:
Remind them that there are often struggles in the beginning of every adventure –
Get your friends and family talking about when they first graduated college/started their own business/or any other life event. Use those stores to point out similarities in what you’re doing. Empathy can be a great tool!
Ask for their support, not for their advice –
Avoid asking them about advice in the first place. Just ask them to support you. Admit that you are scared and nervous. They can be a shoulder to cry on or be there if you feel the need to vent.
Don’t Get Defensive –
You definitely don’t want to get into an argument. Not only will feelings be hurt, but your relationship with the person might be affected. Keep in mind that they don’t understand the business you’re getting into. In time, as they see your success, they will understand, and may want to join you.
Don’t Say Anything in the Beginning –
While just starting your new business, this is really a bad time to tell friends and family anyway because you just might use their concerns as an excuse to stop. Don’t allow that!
Instead, get to work and create some success in your business for a few weeks or months. Then tell your friends in family. Then if they have concerns and questions, you’ll at least have something to say.
You only need one person in this world to believe in you – YOU! –
Be your biggest fan. Become your biggest supporter. Go take life by the horns. The moment is here, it’s now! It’s time for you to make it happen! So GO!
